1939 Corona Zephyr De Luxe

Classic Pica Typeface (10 cpi)

Let me start by saying- This is a particularly rare and difficult to acquire machine in this sort of condition. Even some of the best I’ve seen have been fairly rough due to the initial price point being lower than any other of L.C. Smith & Corona’s models at the time- as such, these were rarely treated with care. The machine is of course fully functional, and types really well for what it is, but also tends to be a ⭐️brag shelf⭐️ model for many collectors due to the scarcity.

It is priced high for two reasons;

  1. All the above☝🏻

  2. I don’t particularly want to sell it, but am trying to be better about such things

Now for the meat and taters! - - - - -

The Corona Zephyr was America’s answer to the Baby, the wildly popular and best selling ultraportable made in Switzerland by Hermes.

L.C. Smith & Corona believed this little lightweight marvel to be the answer to every traveling journalist’s dreams, and weighing in at just under 9lbs in its case, it was a easy machine to travel with.

The design was smart, and eventually led to one of Smith Corona’s most beloved and best selling Typewriters of all time- The Skyriter.

The De Luxe model sold for $10 more than the $29.99 price tag of the regular model Zephyr. For that, the De Luxe added additional features such as- caps lock, margin release, a carriage stop lever for centering before fitting the lid, an extendable paper rest, and perhaps the best… a beautiful spruce green crinkle paint with glossy racing stripes on both the machine AND the case lid.

It’s an incredibly rare machine to find in such good condition, and is definitely a worthy addition to a collection. I’ve had over a dozen Zephyrs in the past 6 years, this is the only De Luxe model I’ve managed to acquire.

Mechanically, it types like very well- Smooth, snappy, and very light key travel for it being an ultra portable.

Cosmetically, it's a handsome little machine. Paint is in almost immaculate condition for one of these, it has the best decals I’ve ever seen on one. I wrestled with keeping it, but a regular Zephyr that I love dearly is already in my private collection, so I made myself choose. : )

The pica typeface is classy, professional, and easy on the eyes at 10 characters per inch. It leaves a good imprint, I absolutely adore how “typewriter-y” the letters appear on the page. Almost a little rough, but still quite readable and charming for that very reason.

The travel of the keys is minimal and fairly easy, not typical on ultra portables as the linkages are shortened. It IS a monochrome typer, meaning it only types with a solid color ribbon, so if you’re wanting two color capabilities, this isn’t the one for you.

The case lid is in almost as good of condition as the little typer- the paint has a virtually no signs of its age, just the usual spots where the clamshell lid rubs the crinkle a bit smooth. Though the rubber on the handle is cracked, it still functions and should continue to hold on if treated with care. (I’ve been hesitant to replace it as the original rubber is green, but am happy to do so upon request if desired.)

There’s division in the Typosphere on these little machines. Folks tend to be pretty passionate one way or another- they either LOVE them, or HATE them. Personally, I love them. The aesthetic, the feel, the soft, slightly rough imprint when typing. I find myself gravitating more and more to the machines that are “Hot Takes”, guess that’s just Kirk being Kirk? ; )

Fun fact:

Many of Smith Coronas portable Typewriters were named with aircraft/flight in mind. (Both airplanes, AND spacecraft!) ✈️✈️✈️

The Clipper, Corsair, Skyriter, Galaxie, Enterprise, Meteor, Mark V, Zephyr, Comet, Ultrasonic and Vantage are all examples of this.

This is NOT an "as-is" typewriter.

It has been lovingly cleaned, oiled, serviced, and thoroughly tested to ensure it'll hang with whatever you decide to write with it.

It comes with everything you see in the pictures and more;

A brand spankin' new solid color ribbon in your choice of cotton or nylon spooled onto vintage spools(installed), a reprinted original owners manual, the typewriter, it's case, an OFFICIAL Nashville Typewriter sticker and hand-typed note from me, the typeface text sample, and even a few sheets of paper to get you started on the path to analog independence and distraction free writing!

* I recommend cotton for this machine, but can accommodate nylon as well *

Has been disassembled, cleaned, oiled lightly in the spots that are supposed to be, and serviced by someone that LOVES typewriters.
