1966 Olympia SM9 *Personal Collection* - **RARE TYPEFACE**
Olympia Modern Elite (12 cpi)
The Olympia SM9- Olympia’s final model in arguably one of the best series of portable Typewriters ever made. This model tops most lists of the best typewriters ever produced, and after a few sentences, it’s easy to see why. (Skip down to the * below to see just the machine specifics, I can get a little “gushy” about my love of these things. Ha.)
It’s no secret that Olympia’s are my favorite brand…
There are specific Typewriters I like more, but Olympia is MY BRAND.
The reason for this is the amount of thought that went into the creation of these amazing machines is mind-boggling. German precision, consistency, and a stunningly handsome, classic design that holds up well even now. The SM series is arguably one of the best ever made, and the SM9 is the pinnacle of that entire run.
Olympia finally went to a basket shift machine with the release of the SM8, a “budget” portable that lacked some of the extra features most the Deluxe versions had. They followed up with the SM9, which has ALL the bells and whistles. Virtually a portable desktop machine, it is a pleasure to write with. The basket shift mechanism makes extended writing periods comfortable by the ease of the shift.
*This machine is in really great shape; it’s been one of my favorites for correspondence for several years now. Platen is in wonderful condition, still soft and has been rejuvenated along with the feed rollers.
The action is like most SM’s, quick, snappy, and consistent. The case is the DeLuxe version- semi hard leather with a zipper in good condition, and it does a great job at protecting the machine. It is mechanically as nice as you could ask for, very quick, very precise, all functions perform flawlessly.
The typeface is a really cool one! Modern elite is the smaller version of my favorite font Olympia offered. It’s fairly rare to come across- I’ve had several modern pica machines, but this is only the second modern elite. It’s concise, classy, and fits more on the page while still being easy to read at 12 characters per inch.
This is NOT an "as-is" typewriter. It has been lovingly cleaned, oiled, serviced, and thoroughly tested to ensure it'll hang with whatever you decide to write with it.
It comes with everything you see in the pictures and more;
