1936 Underwood Universal ✨MINT✨
Elite Typeface - 12cpi
A STUNNING example of Underwood’s, iconic machine. It is by FAR one of the nicest examples of one of these I have come across. The paint and decals are immaculate. It is mechanically sound, types very well, and has a beautiful case to compliment such a machine.
The original owner took VERY good care of this.
The Underwood Typewriter Company is a wonderful and sad story.
The Underwood Number 5 launched in 1900 has been described as "the first truly modern typewriter". Two million had been sold by the early 1920s, and its sales “were equal in quantity to all of the other firms in the typewriter industry combined”. When the company was in its heyday as the worlds' largest typewriter manufacturer, its factory at Hartford, Connecticut was turning out typewriters at the rate of ONE PER MINUTE!
Underwood dominated the market for decades until the 1950’s, when poor decisions were made in releasing too many models and cutting back on quality led to the company being acquired by the Italian Typewriter company Olivetti.
This machine is a fun one! It looks and performs as though it was bought yesterday, but it’s definitely an oldie! The case in in fine shape as well with the original leather handle, and does a fine job protecting this glossy black beauty. It even has the Underwood branded ribbon spool covers! (which in their selves are a rarity.) :)
This is NOT an "as-is" typewriter. It has been lovingly cleaned, oiled, serviced, and thoroughly tested to ensure it'll hang with whatever you decide to write with it.
It comes with everything you see in the pictures and more;
A brand new all-black or red/black ribbon on vintage metal spools(installed), a reprinted original owners manual, the typewriter, its handsome hard case, an OFFICIAL Nashville Typewriter sticker and hand-typed note from me, the typeface text sample, and even a few sheets of paper to get you started on your path to analog independence and distraction-free writing!
F R E E S H I P P I N G in the continental US, estimate available for interested international clients.
